San Diego Minority Supplier Development Council Hosts Supplier Diversity Achievement Week

SAN DIEGO, CALIF.—The San Diego Regional Minority Supplier Development Council will host and celebrate the 1st annual Supplier Diversity Achievement Week in San Diego July 26 – 30, 2010.

Mayor Jerry Sanders is scheduled to speak at the event on Monday, July 26, at 8:10 a.m., at Sony Electronics Corporate Headquarters, and will make a proclamation officially designating Supplier Diversity Achievement Week.

The San Diego City Council publicly supported small and minority businesses in the region in a vote to approve the Small Local Business Enterprise (“SLBE”) program, which became effective July 1, 2010. This initiative will aid in encouraging greater availability, capacity development, and contract participation in City contracts for minority-owned businesses.  The initiative will also provide an additional race- and gender-neutral tool for the City to use in its efforts to ensure that all segments of its local business community have a reasonable and significant opportunity to participate in City contracts.

Many prominent San Diego companies and organizations will be participating in panels at the event, including SDG&E, Costco, the Metropolitan Water District, and the San Diego Regional Airport Authority.

“It’s great to get support from the City Council and Mayor Sanders for the first annual Supplier Diversity Achievement week,” said San Diego Regional Minority Supplier Development Council President and CEO Ron Garnett. “SDG&E, Sony, Union Bank and other major corporations recognize that minority-owned businesses improve their bottom line and bring fresh ideas for reaching diverse audiences with increasing purchasing power. The week’s events will be information-rich for both vendors and corporations and we’ll cap things off on Friday with a jazz concert by Najee.”

Seminar topics include Supporting Small and Diverse Business in San Diego, Keys to Contractor Success, and Why Diversity Matters in Business and the Community. Companies like Sony, Turner Construction, Bridgepoint Education and the National Association Black Journalists will be hosting these seminars.  The finale for the week will be an awards celebration and benefit jazz concert featuring Najee at the Balboa Theatre.
