Cook & Schmid Win Magnum Opus
San Diego PR agency recognized as honoree for custom publishing
SAN DIEGO, CALIF.—Cook & Schmid won the 2008 Gold Magnum Opus Award in the “Best Calendar” category. The San Diego-based firm was recognized for its work creating a calendar as a component of the wildfire safety outreach campaign for the Mountain Area Safety Taskforce (MAST) in San Bernardino County, California.
The Magnum Opus Awards are a Publications Management competition for creative professionals and recognize excellence not only for entire publications but for the best elements of those publications, such as design elements, illustrations, photography, typography and content.
Cook & Schmid developed a distinctive brand for the MAST calendar employing imagery from 1930s and 1940s-era postcards. The concept evoked feelings of the heyday of the San Bernardino Mountains, when the mountains were the playground of such Hollywood stars as Mae West, W.C. Fields and Ingrid Bergman. The MAST brand was designed to appeal to the community’s sense of pride in its history and shared responsibility for protecting its future from the risk of catastrophic wildfires.
Cook & Schmid devised and implemented a variety of strategies that built fire prevention awareness in the San Bernardino County Mountains, including brand development, direct mail, Web site development, media relations, speaking engagements, participation at community fairs and festivals, and the creation of an instructional video that demonstrates how to create defensible space around homes and businesses.
“This campaign generated measurable results and influenced behaviors which increased fire safety practices in the San Bernardino County Mountains. It also contributed directly to saving lives and reduced the number of homes and other structures destroyed in wildfires,” said Jon Schmid, Cook & Schmid partner and supervisor on the MAST account.
Cook & Schmid also earned a 2008 Platinum Hermes Creative Award for its work on the MAST campaign and a 2008 Public Relations Society of America Silver Anvil Award of Excellence, the industry’s highest national honor. In 2007, Cook & Schmid received Silver Anvil and Bronze Anvil awards for its work on the MAST campaign.
