Cook + Schmid Earns PRSA Bronze Anvil Award of Commendation
San Diego firm recognized nationally for outstanding public relations tactics
SAN DIEGO—Cook + Schmid, a full-service public relations and marketing firm, received a Bronze Anvil Award of Commendation from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) for its research and evaluation tactics implemented for the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA).
Cook + Schmid created Housing Matters, a public outreach campaign, to reduce opposition to supportive housing for homeless San Diegans with mental illness. The Bronze Anvil Awards annually recognize outstanding public relations tactics, individual components that contribute to the success of an overall campaign.
The Housing Matters campaign increased awareness and accurate understanding of supportive housing among San Diego residents, and reduced opposition to individual supportive housing developments.
Cook + Schmid conducted qualitative and quantitative studies, including in-depth interviews, a literature review, secondary source review, focus groups and a countywide statistically valid quantitative survey, to fully understand attitudes toward homelessness and supportive housing and to establish a solid foundation for the campaign.
Based on information gathered in these studies, Cook + Schmid designed and implemented a public relations campaign to meet the stated goals of HHSA in regards to supportive housing. One year after the baseline survey, Cook + Schmid conducted a tracking survey, the results of which demonstrated that the campaign’s goals had been far exceeded.
“As an agency, we pride ourselves on our careful and thorough research and evaluation methods, and it is an honor to be recognized in this area,” said Jon Schmid, Cook + Schmid president and CEO.
Cook + Schmid has a history of outstanding public relations campaigns and tactics. PRSA has awarded the firm four Silver Anvils, the industry’s highest national honor for strategic programs, in the past six years. Additionally, Cook + Schmid received Silver Anvil Awards of Excellence in 2008 and 2009, and Bronze Anvils in 2005, 2007 and 2008.
PRSA created the Bronze Anvil Awards in 1969 to recognize outstanding public relations tactics, the individual items or components of programs or campaigns. The awards are presented each year in 39 categories and subcategories. Of the 784 submissions for this year’s competition, only 83 were selected by the Bronze Anvil judges to receive the Bronze Anvil Award of Commendation.
