Ocean Discovery Institute Students Share Personal Reflections from

San Diego urban youth read from new book on their life-changing experiences in ocean and environmental science research programs
SAN DIEGO – Students at Ocean Discovery Institute, a science education organization that empowers youth from urban and diverse backgrounds to become tomorrow’s scientific leaders, will share personal reflections of their experiences with the organization from a recently published anthology, “BELIEVE,” at Warwick’s bookstore in La Jolla November 12 from 4 to 6 p.m.
Written entirely by Ocean Discovery Institute students aged 14 to 17, the book reveals young people’s realizations and discoveries about themselves, how they have transformed their lives, built their dreams, and how they will reach their goals.
Twenty students will each read a section from the book, which was published in partnership with PEN Center USA. All students come from City Heights, which is one of the most diverse communities in the nation, with more than 30 languages spoken. It is also one of the lowest-income communities, with 38 percent living below the poverty rate.
“This book does a phenomenal job demonstrating how our students become empowered to transform their dreams and aspirations into reality. The reading is sure to be inspirational to anyone who attends,” said Carolina Barraza, student graduate and the Events and Communications Coordinator at Ocean Discovery Institute.
The reading will be held at Warwick’s bookstore at 7812 Girard Ave., La Jolla 92037. Copies of the book are available with a suggested donation of $20. If interested, please contact Elizabeth Horpedahl at 858-488-3849. All proceeds help fund Ocean Discovery Institute’s educational programs.
